Last year, it was the Eiffel Tower, this year model and entrepreneur Jessica Minh Anh transformed the iconic Hudson River into the world’s newest catwalk. Amongst those whose silhouettes were shown on the stunning, 100-metre floating fashion ramp in New York City was Pakistani designer Syeda Amera who also made her presence felt at the Pakistan Fashion Week USA last year.

Amera, whose collection mainly in shades of aqua and blue, showcased flowing lines embellished with glittering beads and sequined textures. “The audience enjoyed designs from my country,” says the young designer about her “out-an-out Western collection with cuts that were delicate, transparent and flowy”. The experience where some of the world’s representatives from the fashion world were present “could be called nothing short of thrilling,” says Amera who was one of the three designers whose outfits were chosen for the finale. Commenting on her collection, Anh said, “Syeda Amera’s designs embody the elegance of a woman while giving her that needed edge. I am attracted to the stunning shades of aqua and blue, beaded details, and dynamic patterns in her collection. I believe the world will fall in love with her.”

The Karachi-based Amera, who has studied fashion in France and Bangkok, says she enjoys creating designs both for her Western as well as Eastern clientele. Her label includes pret-a-porter, haute couture and bridals.

Talking about the popularity of Pakistani designs in India, Amera says, “Both Pakistan and India share a common bond and culture, that’s why they appreciate and enjoy designs from each other’s countries.” In fact, it is this similarity of culture that has helped create a market for Pakistani designers in India. A similar, appreciative response is given to Indian designers in Pakistan as well. “Indian designers like Manish Malhotra, Neeta Lulla, Sabyasachi Mukherjee and Ritu Kumar, all of whom have carved a niche in the world of bridal sarees, lehengas, etc are greatly admired in our country,” she adds.
